Direct Vent Fireplaces

Direct vent fireplaces give you the option of designing your room and installing your gas fireplace in locations where it isn’t possible to use a traditional masonry fireplace. Besides providing warmth and the ambiance of a fire, a direct vent fireplace is also a “zero clearance”. Zero clearance means the heat of the fireplace is radiated out through the front glass, but the sides are safe for furniture and other combustibles to be located fairly close to the firebox. Another feature making these fireplaces so versatile is that they can be vented through the roof or through a wall giving you placement options that were never before possible.

Because a direct vent fireplace has a zero clearance it is easy to install. You do not need a complicated foundation for the fireplace. The unit can have a wood frame directly against the side of it and it can be placed on a plywood base. Direct vent fireplaces have a metal standoff on the top of the unit that cannot be removed, but top framing can be placed on top of the standoff.

With the numerous doors, trim, finishes and other accessories that are available, there are an endless number of possibilities as far as to who the finished unit will look. The final fireplace can have a classic, rustic or contemporary look.

When it comes to ease of use, a direct vent fireplace is definitely the way to go. The options depend on the specific type of fireplace you buy, but the unit is basically operated by the flick of a switch. Some fireplaces have a rocker on/off switch pre-installed. Remote control units are also available. A basic remote control will turn the flame off and on or a more comprehensive control will allow you to control the flame height and fan speed or control these items automatically depending on the temperature of the room.

With advanced technologies, even though these fireplaces have artificial logs the flames can be realistic looking and many have a burning unit that produce large yellow dancing flames with an interesting flame pattern.

Direct vent fireplaces provide a clean and efficient heat source. These fireplaces are gas powered and do not produce the smoke and pollution which a wood fireplace generates. In addition, there is no ash or other particles to clean up. Because the fireplaces turns on with the touch of a button and warms up quickly, you can easily warm up a room or area of the house without turning up the furnace.

Maintenance is also quite minimal for a direct vent fireplace. You should refer to the unit’s manual for specific information on the tasks that need to be done to keep your unit running efficiently. Routine tasks include cleaning the glass and burner.
